Atacand is utilized to lower blood pressure in those with hypertension. It falls under the category of angiotensin receptor agonists. Atacand functions by diminishing hormones that narrow blood vessels, resulting in relaxed vessels and reduced pressure. Additionally, Atacand is prescribed alongside other medications for the treatment of heart failure and kidney issues associated with type 2 diabetes.

The dosage of Atacand is determined by how an individual responds to the medication. A person's blood pressure might vary with dosages ranging from 2 to 32 mg. Atacand can be administered either once or twice daily, with a total daily dose anywhere between eight mg and thirty-two mg. Research has indicated that higher dosages do not necessarily lead to greater effectiveness during treatment. The antihypertensive impact is most significant within the first two weeks, and the peak reduction in blood pressure is typically achieved within four to six weeks of initiating treatment.

Like other antihypertensive medications, Atacand may lower blood pressure below normal levels, potentially leading to dizziness, weakness, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Allergic reactions can occur, characterized mostly by hives. Angioedema has also been linked to its use, resulting in swelling of the hands, face, lips, tongue, and even the eyes. Pregnant women should avoid taking Atacand, as it may lead to fetal development issues or even fatality. Women planning to become pregnant should seek alternative treatments. Breastfeeding has not been shown to transfer the drug from mother to child.

Those with imbalances in sodium and potassium electrolytes should inform their healthcare providers, as Atacand might cause unintended alterations in electrolyte levels. The combined use of diuretics with Atacand needs to be carefully evaluated because their interaction can lead to excessive changes in blood pressure. Additionally, a history of heart and kidney conditions renders Atacand inappropriate. Patients undergoing dialysis may not be prescribed this medication. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can diminish its effectiveness.
